The Prius has always boasted nearly unsurpassed fuel economy, and the 2010 model looks to be no different. Fuel economy is at a premium with this Highlander, certainly as compared with its mid-sized SUV classmates. The console is simple and clean with an optional navigation system that is very intuitive. Beyond that, we were pleasantly surprised at how well it handles and by the smooth, quiet ride even when powered by the fuel engine at higher speeds.

The Camry hybrid nets 187 hp, almost 30 hp more than the regular Camry, while getting 33 mpg in the city and 34 on the highway – a substantial gain in mpg too. But what about that extra $7000 over the base model? It all comes out in the wash considering the hybrid is chockablock with standard features and luxuries, putting it on par with similarly priced XLE . Affordable, well-appointed and good for the planet? Take that, Honda.

The Venza’s expressive exterior styling is sort of a surprise from conservative Toyota, and we approve. The interior is full of clever storage solutions, and the huge rear seat not only offers tremendous hip- and legroom, but the split seatback reclines to an angle that’s actually comfortable.

Like a Pixar film, this car’s looks appeal to everyone. Its rounded, oversized headlamps and bubble-shaped hatchback trim make it irresistible. Toyota recognizes that owners need room for their stuff, so cup holders and cubby spaces are plentiful and fit a variety of storage needs.

There are now disc brakes on all four wheels, but with the overwhelming influence of the regenerative brakes, slowing to a stop still feels like there’s a Driver's Ed instructor riding a second pedal. The folks at Toyota say the suspension has been firmed up.
