I feel like it would be a lot easier to sum up the all-new Volkswagen Golf TDI had I spent the last six months on some sort of self-imposed media blackout, not reading foreign road tests, not listening to industry chatter and certainly not paying attention to the various awards that have been doled out to VW’s perennial hatch since its launch earlier this year. Read on for more detailed information in the following article.
The 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine is a holdover from the previous MKV and puts out 170 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. Power is delivered through the front wheels via either an automatic or five-speed manual.
The just-right sports seats, race inspired flat bottom steering wheel and cavernous interior set the R32 apart from the crowd. The exhaust note, with a lovely whoofle on downshift, is sublime and the DSG gearbox is a real revelation. The fact that the R32 is subtle enough to both blend in with traffic when anonymity is desired and still put enthusiasts on notice with tasteful badging and performance cues perfectly its role of a wolf-in-sheep’s clothing.

At first, the Jetta delivers a somewhat mundane drive – a bit soft in the corners, the auto gearbox quick to shift in the interest of fuel economy. Dig a bit deeper however, and you’ll discover the Jetta’s got some character. Popping the automatic transmission into sport mode will keep the buzzy five-cylinder within its usable midrange, and the suspension is well-judged, offering up a confident stance in corners yet still managing to soak up imperfections in the road with ease. As with most Volkswagens, the steering is rock-solid and accurate. Brakes are a bit too squidgy to engage excessively solid stopping power, though emergency braking is sufficiently quick.
The stiffened suspension of Volkswagen Routan makes for a much more dynamic ride than the traditional fare. The third row can be folded away under the floor with a push of a button and the side doors open and close with just a tug of the handle. Free scheduled maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles will let Routan owners worry about the more important things in their lives.
VW’s first real entry in this segment may have in fact started the segment. The Karmann Ghia of the 1950’s was a very sporty, sexy looking car that had the same underpinnings as the Beetle.
Good fuel economy is paired with a useful powerband thanks to the torque of the turbocharged engine. Sporty dynamics and acceleration that seem to defy the Tiguan’s dimensions are always on tap, and a 2,200-pound towing capacity, along with ample interior room, make it a remarkably usable vehicle.
All the comfort and standard features found in a gas-powered Touareg, but with a 25 percent increase in fuel economy. An unfussy and well-designed interior is upscale and meets luxury vehicle standards set by Mercedes-Benz and Lexus.

The GTI sticks to its guns, and deserves a lot of respect for doing so. VW has resisted the temptation to overpower the car, unlike, well, just about every other offering in the segment. The availability of a dual-clutch automatic only adds to the GTI’s appeal, not to mention allows it to achieve fantastic fuel economy figures.
VW has already announced its commitment to turning this concept into a production vehicle, but the company is dependent on its corporate partners before giving the final say one way or the other. As it is, both Audi and Porsche would need to sign off on the car before Volkswagen could move forward. The good news is Audi has already mentioned its own version of the BlueSport Concept and Porsche is interested in creating a model positioned below its current entry-level Boxster.

The exterior design also has remenents of the L1 concept, but the styling is more practical - potentially signifying an intent to eventually put it into production. It features an almost edgeless aerodynamic and lightweight body (it weighs just 1,500 pounds) made of a combination of aluminum and carbon fiber.
